ARTIST STATEMENT

I'm curious to explore how the digital mapping of existence and the age of information is related to what it can mean to be human.

So far, a large part of my work has explored how we interact with this brave new world, exploring the boundaries of the sense's whilst entwined with digital capabilities. I'm interested in the roles of our sense's and human consciousness within these frameworks, especially the aural and visual re configuration's with electric mediums. If the medium is the message, then a better understanding of how we use machines and how they use us, is something to explore.

In a general sense, I create to add to the great study of life, to provide humanity with experiences that experiment with human potential and the coming together of beings, and for the thrill of the discovery.

Shadow Hands - Dancing is the

Expression of the Soul

2015– Digital video - 4.33 minutes - 16x9

This work is a document of the energy or release of movement expressed through sound. I wanted to see what could be captured on video, if anything, about this unconsciousness or felt movement.

It's a close up of the shadows created by the hands of a great untrained dancer, letting go to some pulsating rhythms. The camera captures 3 sets of hand shadows. The original tests had the hands in the frame and we realized the footage provoked an analytical type of thinking. As a viewer, the technicality of the movement became the focus and it felt like it took the feeling of dance out of the footage. So we played around with the lighting and realized that a more reflective observation or story like atmosphere came with use of shadows, and with multiple shadows, a great way to explore multiple perspectives on the one movement.

In today's electric world, sound devices and their compositions are in most places, where we gather, in our homes, on the streets, in our digital realms and where we buy our goods. For better or worse, we are developing a common knowledge of how sound can used as a psychological device to alter our experiences.

By this i mean, some people need compositions, some people need concepts. A recent example of sound concept was one that i worked on for my partner's hair salon. Sound wise, hairdressing is usually a cacophony of conversations and tools, a large percentage of a hairdressers time can be devoted to talking. After some research and some big idea mapping, we decided that we could implement a 'Silent Salon' concept, a bookable one on one session with minimal communication between client and hairdresser and a focus on a more therapeutic salon experience which included ambient soundscapes and subtle changes to the lighting. We discovered through our trials that a large percentage of the clients were wrapped with the concept as sometimes people just feel like tuning out. It was an imbalance that was felt by both sides, and by redesigning the experience of sound, it created a significant change within the business structure and been a real success.

Sound has many sides which is what my business is about. It's a huge part of what i enjoy about life and it's a language that i love to learn about. As we skyrocket into the age of information and technology, I believe that the use of sound has great potential to create peace within and is a tool to redefine our experience .

My business and studio is based in Hobart. I work Australia wide and offer free consultations. If you have any queries or interests, feel free to call or send an email.

So that's sound

Sometimes it's a sole composition that aims to compliment, sometimes it's a concept that can lead to an extension.

Although music composition is a big part of what do, it's not everything. With every new project, i take into consideration what the client needs and has to offer and then create a framework of potential sound concepts which we then take the necessary steps to implement. Perhaps the sound sense is overloaded, we can think of ways to allocate silence or redefine the already present soundscapes. Maybe the visual  measurement and redirection of the senses within what you do to enhance what you offer.

used keeping up so  To explore another side of hairdressing,

We did a trial and the response from the clients and hairdressers was ecstatic. In general we found that the customers could really relax because their was a general idea that you have to talk in a salon and the hairdressers loved it because they could give 100% attention to their craft. Since it was such a success, it has now been implemented into full time business structure.

We had a opportunity to work at the market in the MONA FOMA music and arts festival and she wanted to do do something out of the ordinary.

Sound can play important

As a composer, i like

It can be used to alter our psychological state of time, it can be an emotional story that weaves us into new feelings
